Qualcomm launches first chipset with Isro’s NavIC GPS for Android smartphones

Qualcomm has launched three new chipsets with support for Navigation with Indian regional satellite navigation system (NavIC). Three new chipsets are Snapdragon 720G, 662 and 460. Now the Smartphones running on new Qualcomm chipsets will be using Indian regional satellite navigation system which has been developed by ISRO.

Chinese smartphone companies ‘Realme’ and ‘Xiaomi(Redmi)’ have also confirmed that they will be launching their new smartphones with Indian regional satellite navigation system (NavIC) support based on new snapdragon chipsets.

“Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has provided consultation for Qualcomm towards enabling NavIC capability in their Snapdragon mobile chipset platforms. These chipsets are being released by Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. The release of chipsets will help accelerate the adoption of NavIC by smartphone OEMs. The OEMs (Original equipment manufactures) can now release any new models for Indian market which are NavIC enabled, thus eventually making NavIC as a standard feature in the upcoming handsets, applications, processors, etc. It will also enhance the geolocation capabilities of smartphones within the coverage region of NavIC,” ISRO said in its statement.

Apart from smartphones, Indian Air Force will also use NavIC in fighter jets for navigation.

NavIC is the India’s own domestic GPS (Global Positioning System), Navigation with Indian Constellation (NavIC). In September 2019, It was approved by the international organization 3GPP (3rd Generation Partnership Project). NavIC is RPS i.e. Regional Navigation System. While others GPS have a position accuracy of 20-30 meters, the position accuracy of the NavIC is 5 meters, making it technically better than the all others GPS.

No. of satellites used in NavIC:

In NavIC, total 8 satellites are deployed over India. Seven are for satellite navigation. One is for satellite messaging. Some apps based on NavIC are already working, while some will start soon.

The NavIC will look exactly like the American GPS, but its quality will be better than the GPS. NaVIC will provide accurate navigation data of Sea, land and air. It will be useful in disaster management, vehicle tracking and fleet management, integration with mobile phones, precise timing, mapping etc.

Others GPS have a position accuracy of 20-30 meters, the position accuracy of the NavIC is 5 meters, making it technically better than the all others GPS. NavIC has 5 times more accuracy than other GPS.
