An encounter between security forces and Naxalites took place in Sukma, Chhattisgarh on Saturday. 17 soldiers have lost their lives while 14 jawans have been injured in this encounter. The condition of two of them is critical. At the same time, five to six Naxalites were also killed in the encounter.
“Seventeen bodies of jawans of state police has been recovered by the rescue teams sent in the jungle till now,” said Chhattisgarh’s Director General of Police (DGP) D M Awasthi
For the first time in the history of Bastar, the soldiers of the DRG i.e. District Reserve Guard have suffered such a huge loss. Of the 17 soldiers martyred, 12 are from DRG. The DRG is a team of security forces formed by local youths, which has been most effective against the Naxalites. Naxalites also looted 15 weapons of the soldiers, including AK-47, INSAS, LMG and UBGL.
It is being told that many Naxalites have also been injured. The soldiers have recovered the body of a slain Naxalite. The injured soldiers have been airlifted to Raipur. They admitted to Ramakrishna Hospital. The condition of many of them is said to be critical.
Chhattisgarh DGP DM Awasthi said that five to six Naxalites were killed in the encounter. An equal number of Naxalites are estimated to be injured. 14 jawans have been injured in the encounter.
